How many paintings make a series?

The number of paintings in a series can vary depending on the artist's vision, in the past I have created a series with as few as 12 pieces and there was a time that I painted 100 paintings in a series which was released all at once.

I often like to set parameters for myself when creating a new series.

The series of 100 Storms was created over a 100 day period with a limited color palette.

Setting parameters in a series is a good way to manage your series and to stop from going overboard. (maybe 100 was overboard)

100 Days of Storms Series

Ultimately, the "right" number is whatever feels complete for the concept behind the series.

Here is a quick overview on how to create a series of artwork that might work for you.

  1. Choose a theme - Start with something that resonates with your style.

    My usual theme is storms.

  2. Plan your approach- Decide on the style or techniques you want to use.

For me setting parameters is a big part of each collection.

  3. Set a specific goal - How many paintings do you want to create?

  4. Start creating the first piece - seems simple I know but sometimes artist block happens.

  5. Keep a connection - This really can be tied into #2 setting parameters or a main subject can really help keep the collection feeling connected.

  6. Display and Present your series

  7. Reflect - Did you know that I often burn unsold artwork? I know it seems dramatic but it helps me to reflect.

I hope this quick overview gives you an insight into the way I create a series of art. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
